Behind the Scenes

Clapper

Last night was definitely another adventure in movie making history for the team of Eric, Jose, Catt and myself. This time I did get to read the script in advance, which totally helped keep me on track of what exactly was going to happen next, and I even had a chance to really help with the lighting and got to play with the clapper.

As I learn more about the art of making a short film I begin to realize that the team behind it has to be that, a team. There are a lot of pieces in this motion picture puzzle that are all vital no matter how minuscule you may think they are. From the sound guy to the human lightstands, you’re truly in need of more hands to help even if the area you’re shooting in is no bigger than a small bedroom. This team has to work well together and even when personalities would happen to flare they are calmed quickly by the director and the seriousness of the next take.

Father

I learned quickly that being in the way was part of just being there to help. Everyone has a place to be and at times it’s difficult to be the new person next to the action. I’m glad I’m surrounded by people with a good sense of humor or else I’d probably be asked to sit in the corner from time to time. If there is one thing you’ll experience while working on a set is that you can’t drift off to far from the task at hand or you’ll miss that critical moment and the stares you get from the team sting a little more than usual.

Even though this is a difficult task I enjoy every moment of it and absorb what I can when I can. Being around the circle of people involved makes the next part of the adventure that much easier. In time I hope to take what I’m learning and apply it at the right moments in our future ventures so that we too can one day wow and amazes a captive audience.
